Discover the Northern Lights

The weeks leading up to Christmas are among those in which the breathtaking northern lights are at their most visible inside the Arctic Circle. We have a series of Festive Lights short breaks running from late November to the end of the Christmas holiday, with special departures from regional airports across the UK – perfect for combining nature’s most extraordinary light show with the atmosphere of the festive period. On these tours, you’ll search for the aurora borealis by snowmobile (or ‘skidoo’) and on a forest trek, where our guides will take you to a remote vantage point, in the hope of a spectacular northern lights sighting.

FESTIVE LIGHTS ITINERARY

Your two, three or four-night Festive Lights break begins with a flight from your chosen UK airport to Enontekio in Northern Finland. This will be a festive themed flight, possibly with carol singing included. From there, you make the short transfer to the Arctic Star Hotel in Karesuando.

As well as two, three or four nights’ full board accommodation at the Arctic Star (including for those staying over Christmas Day or New Year’s Day, a special Christmas Dinner or New Year’s Eve Dinner) and loan of an all-in-one thermal suit and boots, your break includes all the activities detailed below. We’ll organise the running order according to the local conditions while you’re there. We can also give you the chance to choose from our programme of optional excursions – including one of the highlights of our Arctic Spirit programmes – the chance to spend the night in an igloo!

Northern Lights Snowmobile Safari

Accommodation

Arctic Star Hotel

Situated on the outskirts of Swedish Karesuando, the Arctic Star is a traditional and friendly hotel offering superb views over both the majestic Muonio River and the Kaarevaara fell. Here, you are well placed to explore Karesuando on foot, dropping in at Sweden’s most northerly church, paying a visit to the local museum and regularly crossing the Finnish-Swedish border.

Whilst simple and comfortable, the hotel has recently undergone a programme of modernisation and has all the essentials you need for a good stay including an open plan bar and dining area. The rooms are simple and cosy, with room upgrades available.

Premium Double Room (Sleeps 2)

Underfloor Heating - Rainfall Shower

The premium rooms underwent a full refurbishment in the summer of 2012, masterminded by a celebrated team of Parisian architects. Refurbished to a high standard, these double rooms feature underfloor heating, glass panels between the rain shower room and bedroom and feature mirrors. While stylish, space is limited (13 square metres), with modest storage space.

Standard Double/Twin (Sleeps 2-3)

These value-for-money twin and double rooms offer a generous 15.8 square metres of space, with en suite facilities. Whilst they have not been refurbished in recent years, the rooms are comfortable and traditional. They can also accommodate a third person on a fold-up bed if required, making them ideal for the budget conscious.
