Best viewed through the dark nights of winter, Aurora Borealis is at its most vivid across the skies of the Arctic Circle region

NORTHERN LIGHTS ITINERARY
Your Northern Lights break begins with a flight to Kiruna* in Sweden or Enontekio** in Finland, the ‘Gateways to the Arctic’. From these airports, you make the 1-2 hour transfer to Karesuando a spectacular journey, travelling through the majestic forests and passing countless frozen lakes (2 hours from Kiruna, 1 from Enontekio). The highlight of your break will be the two occasions when you set off beneath an Arctic night sky in the hope of encountering the fabled northern lights.
Your itinerary includes all the activities detailed below. We’ll organise the running order according to the local conditions while you’re there. We can also give you the chance to choose from our programme of optional excursions: perhaps spend a night in an igloo – a highlight of our Arctic Spirit programmes.
In addition to these exciting excursions Dr Stuart Clarke, award winning author and fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, will be giving a series of exclusive talks on the Aurora Borealis (selected dates only).

Arctic Star Hotel
Situated on the outskirts of Swedish Karesuando, the Arctic Star is a traditional and friendly hotel offering superb views over both the majestic Muonio River and the Kaarevaara fell. Here, you are well placed to explore Karesuando on foot, dropping in at Sweden’s most northerly church, paying a visit to the local museum and regularly crossing the Finnish-Swedish border.
Whilst simple and comfortable, the hotel has recently undergone a programme of modernisation and has all the essentials you need for a good stay including an open plan bar and dining area. The rooms are simple and cosy, with room upgrades available.
Deluxe Room (Sleeps 2)
Underfloor Heating - Rainfall shower
The deluxe rooms were refurbished in 2012 by the same team of Parisian architects that also masterminded the premium rooms. These double rooms offer the same features as the premium rooms including underfloor heating and a rain shower, but are larger in size. We highly recommended the deluxe room for guests that chose a longer stay.
Superior Double Room (Sleeps 2-3)
Largest room type
These twin and double rooms enjoy a view from the first floor at the front of the hotel towards Kaarevaara Hill and the nearby frozen lake. These traditional rooms are the largest that the Arctic Star provides, at an impressive 17 square metres and their en-suite shower rooms were refurbished in 2011.
Premium Double Room (Sleeps 2)
Underfloor Heating - Rainfall Shower
The premium rooms underwent a full refurbishment in the summer of 2012, masterminded by a celebrated team of Parisian architects. Refurbished to a high standard, these double rooms feature underfloor heating, glass panels between the rain shower room and bedroom and feature mirrors. While stylish, space is limited (13 square metres), with modest storage space.
Standard Double/Twin (Sleeps 2-3)
These value-for-money twin and double rooms offer a generous 15.8 square metres of space, with en suite facilities. Whilst they have not been refurbished in recent years, the rooms are comfortable and traditional. They can also accommodate a third person on a fold-up bed if required, making them ideal for the budget conscious.
Davvi Arctic Lodge Hotel
We always find a warm welcome awaits at the Davvi Arctic Lodge. This charming, simple hotel is set on a quiet, secluded hillside in the border-village of Karesuando. The beautiful restaurant, its circular design inspired by the shape of a Sami reindeer corral, is the hotel’s centrepiece and there you can enjoy spectacular panoramic views over the snow-covered hillside to Swedish Lapland across the border.
The Davvi Arctic Lodge hotel rooms are set on two floors in a wing that extends from the main building. All the rooms are en suite, although some of the bathrooms (shower, WC) are very small.
Davvi Arctic Lodge Cabins
The Davvi Arctic Lodge offers accommodation in timber-built cabins conveniently situated within its grounds. The traditional timber buildings are cosy and all are en suite (shower, WC) with a private sauna. All cabins are just metres from the main hotel building, where meals are taken.
Davvi Arctic Lodge Aurora House
The Davvi Arctic Lodge now offers comfortable designer accommodation for those who would like to enjoy something extra special. The Aurora House takes your arctic experience to new levels, with a choice of superior and deluxe rooms to choose from, each equipped with added comforts for your stay.
This is sumptuous Scandinavian chic, a standard unparalleled within the Davvi Arctic Lodge and rarely found elsewhere in Finland. Please note that all meals will be taken at the Davvi Arctic Lodge restaurant on the same basis as other hotel guests.
The superior room offers spacious, contemporary design. Both underfloor heating and a wood burning stove can be found inside this room, along with tea and coffee making facilities.
Our Deluxe Rooms were refurbished in 2012 by the same team of Parisian architects that also masterminded our premium rooms. These double rooms offer greater space with underfloor heating, feature mirrors and glass panels between the rain shower room and bedroom.
