Snowmobiling.

Machines used for this activity are given different names. They can be called snow machines or sleds. These exciting vehicles travel quickly over snow and ice.

They don’t need roads or trails they can travel across open terrain. They can move up the sides of steep hills.

Originally they were used for hunters who needed a way to travel across the terrain. They were also used to carry materials and workers across frozen lakes and rivers when there was no other way of doing it. They are still used in the arctic as a means of travel.

These days these snowmobiles are used as a hobby and for recreation. Most of machines bought are in North America as this is a country, which gets a lot of snow.

Because these sleds or snowmobiles can travel up to speeds of 150 miles an hour there is a race calendar for the sport.

The longest of these races is held annually in Alaska and is called the ‘Iron Dog’ race it is nearly 2000 miles long.

Driving a snowmobile takes training like anything else .The drivers need to be skilled in knowing when to bend forward going up hill or else they will slide down. They will need to be able to make sharp turns to change direction and if they are into ariel snowmobile tricks they will need to be able to perform the ‘can can’ and ‘nac nac.’
