The Swedish city of Luleå enjoys a magnificent location on a peninsula where the Lule Bay meets the Gulf of Bothnia. The peninsula itself overlooks a vast archipelago of over 17,000 islands and skerries most of which are uninhabited and unexploited.
The old town or Gammelstad, is the original settlement of Luleå and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. An impressive collection of decorative village buildings surround the church which was originally intended as a cathedral and is one of the most impressive in Sweden. Modern Luleå has an excellent selection of shops, cafes and restaurants and, partly due to its popular university, is a lively and friendly city and virtually the last spot of civilisation before entering the Arctic wilderness.
